HEAL: Humanism Evolving through Arts and Literature

July, 2025

Split is one of the most personal poems I’ve written. It tells the story of the day my mother, my closest companion, who lived with me for a decade, was wheeled into my own emergency department. She was cared for by my colleagues and friends, and while they did everything right, I could do nothing to stop the helplessness that came with watching her become the patient. In that moment, I was not her doctor. I was her daughter. This poem lives in that space.

Published in the Summer 2025 issue of HEAL, you can read it here (page 11).
